Healthcare: The General Practitioner (Huisarts)
Why you must see a GP before a specialist in the Netherlands.

π³π± 1. De huisarts en inschrijven
De huisarts is het belangrijkste contactpunt voor uw gezondheid. U moet zich inschrijven bij een huisarts in uw woonbuurt.
Bij ziekte, pijn of psychische problemen gaat u altijd eerst naar de huisarts.
U moet een afspraak maken voordat u naar de praktijk gaat. U meldt de naam van uw huisarts bij uw zorgverzekeraar.
π¬π§ 1. The GP and Registration
The general practitioner (huisarts) is the most important contact point for your health. You must register with a huisarts in your neighborhood.
Whether you have illness, pain, or psychological problems, you always go to the huisarts first.
You must make an appointment (afspraak) before going to the practice. You must also report the name of your huisarts to your health insurer.
π³π± 2. Verwijsbrief en specialist
Als de huisarts denkt dat u specialistische hulp nodig heeft, stuurt hij u door.
U krijgt dan een verwijsbrief mee voor de specialist in het ziekenhuis.
Zonder deze verwijsbrief kunt u geen afspraak maken bij de specialist.
π¬π§ 2. Referral Letter and Specialist
If the huisarts thinks you need specialized help, they will refer you.
You will then receive a referral letter (verwijsbrief) for the specialist at the hospital.
Without this referral letter, you cannot make an appointment with a specialist.
π³π± 3. Spoed en huisartsenpost
Voor levensbedreigende noodgevallen belt u direct 112.
Als u 's avonds of in het weekend met spoed een dokter nodig heeft, maar niet tot de volgende werkdag kunt wachten, belt u de huisartsenpost.
De huisartsenpost is alleen voor dringende zaken.
π¬π§ 3. Emergencies and Out-of-hours
For life-threatening emergencies, call 112 immediately.
If you need a doctor urgently in the evening or on the weekend, but cannot wait until the next working day, call the huisartsenpost (out-of-hours GP post).
The huisartsenpost is only for urgent matters.
π³π± 4. Apotheek en kosten
U haalt uw medicijnen bij de apotheek. Soms kunt u medicijnen kopen zonder recept. Voor andere medicijnen heeft u een recept van de arts nodig.
Uw basisverzekering betaalt de kosten van de huisarts.
U betaalt een eigen risico voor veel zorgkosten, maar niet voor het bezoek aan de huisarts.
π¬π§ 4. Pharmacy and Costs
You pick up your medicines at the pharmacy (apotheek). Sometimes you can buy medicines without a prescription (recept). For other medicines, you need a prescription from the doctor.
Your basic insurance pays for the costs of the huisarts.
You pay a deductible / own risk (eigen risico) for many healthcare costs, but NOT for visiting the huisarts (it is free of deductible).
