Healthcare: The General Practitioner (Huisarts)
Why you must see a GP before a specialist in the Netherlands.

🇳🇱 1. De huisarts en inschrijven
U moet zich inschrijven bij een huisarts in uw woonbuurt. Bij uw eerste bezoek heeft u vaak een kennismakingsgesprek.
Wilt u dat uw nieuwe huisarts informatie krijgt van uw vorige huisarts? Dat mag alleen als u daar toestemming voor geeft.
De arts heeft beroepsgeheim. Als u de taal niet goed spreekt, moet u zelf een tolk regelen.
🇬🇧 1. The GP and Registration
You must register with a GP (huisarts) in your neighborhood. During your first visit, you often have an introductory talk (kennismakingsgesprek).
Do you want your new GP to receive information from your previous GP? This is only allowed if you give permission (toestemming).
The doctor has professional secrecy (beroepsgeheim). If you do not speak the language well, you must arrange an interpreter (tolk) yourself.
🇳🇱 2. Verwijsbrief en andere zorg
Als de huisarts denkt dat u specialistische hulp nodig heeft, stuurt hij u door naar de specialist in het ziekenhuis.
Voor psychische problemen kan de huisarts u doorverwijzen naar de GGZ (Geestelijke Gezondheidszorg) of maatschappelijk werk.
Voor seksuele gezondheid (bijv. een soa) kunt u ook naar de GGD.
Een tandarts zoekt u zelf. Hiervoor heeft u geen verwijsbrief nodig.
🇬🇧 2. Referrals and Other Care
If the huisarts thinks you need specialized help, they will refer you to the specialist at the hospital.
For psychological problems, the GP can refer you to the GGZ (Mental Health Care) or social work (maatschappelijk werk).
For sexual health (e.g. an STD / soa), you can also go to the GGD (Municipal Health Service).
You find a dentist (tandarts) yourself. You do not need a referral letter for this.
🇳🇱 3. Spoed en Ziekenhuis
Voor noodgevallen belt u 112. In het ziekenhuis moet u zich eerst melden bij de balie en uw ID en verzekeringsbewijs laten zien.
In het ziekenhuis mag u vaak geen mobiele telefoon gebruiken. Moet u bellen? Dan moet u naar buiten gaan.
Heeft u 's avonds spoed? Bel de huisartsenpost. Voor zorg aan huis (zoals krukken lenen) regelt u thuiszorg. Als iemand niet meer thuis kan wonen, gaat hij naar een verzorgingshuis.
🇬🇧 3. Emergency and Hospital
For emergencies, call 112. In the hospital, you must first report to the desk and show your ID and proof of insurance (verzekeringsbewijs).
Often you are not allowed to use a mobile phone in the hospital. Do you need to call? Then you must go outside.
Do you have an emergency in the evening? Call the GP post (huisartsenpost). For home care (like borrowing crutches), you arrange home care (thuiszorg). If someone can no longer live at home, they go to a nursing home (verzorgingshuis).
🇳🇱 4. Apotheek en kosten
Medicijnen haalt u bij de apotheek. Voor sommige medicijnen heeft u een recept nodig. Voor andere (zoals hoestdrank) kunt u ook naar de drogist.
De huisarts kost geen eigen risico. Soms betaalt u een eigen bijdrage voor medicijnen.
Mensen met een laag inkomen kunnen zorgtoeslag aanvragen bij de Belastingdienst.
🇬🇧 4. Pharmacy and Costs
You pick up your medicines at the pharmacy (apotheek). For some medicines you have to pay a personal contribution (eigen bijdrage).
The GP does not cost any deductible (eigen risico). People with a low income can apply for a healthcare allowance (zorgtoeslag) from the tax authorities (Belastingdienst).
