Na de watersnoodramp van 1953 zijn de Deltawerken gebouwd. Deze grote dammen beschermen Zeeland tegen de zee.

The Netherlands is a flat country. A large part of the country lies below sea level (onder de zeespiegel).
Therefore, there are dikes and dunes to protect the land.
After the flood disaster of 1953, the Delta Works (Deltawerken) were built. These large dams protect Zeeland against the sea.
🇳🇱 2. Polders en Waterschap
Een polder is een stuk land waar vroeger water was. Nederlanders hebben dit land zelf gemaakt (inpolderen).
De provincie Flevoland bestaat bijna helemaal uit polders.
Het Waterschap zorgt voor veilige dijken en schoon water. U betaalt hiervoor waterschapsbelasting.

A polder is a piece of land where there used to be water. The Dutch created this land themselves (inpolderen).
The province of Flevoland consists almost entirely of polders.
The Water Board (Waterschap) ensures safe dikes and clean water. You pay water authority tax (waterschapsbelasting) for this.
🇳🇱 3. De Randstad
De Randstad is het drukke westen van Nederland. De vier grootste steden liggen in de Randstad: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag, en Utrecht.
De helft van alle Nederlanders woont en werkt in de Randstad. Daar is veel werk. Maar er zijn vaak files op de snelwegen.

The Randstad is the busy west of the Netherlands. The four largest cities are located in the Randstad: Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht.
Half of all Dutch people live and work in the Randstad. There is a lot of work there. But there are often traffic jams (files) on the highways.
🇳🇱 4. Provincies en Hoofdstad
Nederland heeft 12 provincies.
Amsterdam is de hoofdstad van Nederland en ligt in Noord-Holland. De hoofdstad van Noord-Holland is Haarlem.
De regering zit echter in Den Haag.

The Netherlands has 12 provinces.
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands, located in North Holland (Noord-Holland). The capital of North Holland is Haarlem.
However, the government is located in The Hague (Den Haag).
